WILLIAM GILES
Born in Boston in 1934, William grew up in London, Johannesburg and finally Buenos Aires from the ages of 5-16, when he fled the Peron government to finish his schooling in the US and continue his education at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. During his 2nd year at Cornell in 1953, he opened Bill's Photography Studio. On the advice of Dorothea Lange, William went to the blossoming hotbed of photographic teaching in Rochester, NY, to pursue his photography. From 1958-59, he interned under Minor White, then head of the Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology. This experience had a profound and lasting effect on William's photographic work and on his life-long teaching career. From 1960-1972, Will taught photography at the University of Rochester where he was the Department of Photography Director from 1965-1972. He founded the Rochester Photographic Workshops in 1964.William moved to the West Coast in the early 1970s, spending time in Mendocino, Santa Cruz and Los Angeles, where he continued to formulate workshops and create new bodies of his own work while still spending periods teaching back East. Since 1989, he has made his home on the Monterey Peninsula amidst a dynamic and supportive photographic community of colleagues and friends.
