Facsimile Copy of a 1796 Sherry Import Certificate signed by Samuel Whittemore (1733–1806) of Gloucester, Mass., was the son of Samuel and Margaret Hicks Whittemore. Whittemore graduated from Harvard in 1751, was a member of three Massachusetts provincial congresses, and served in the General Court in 1776 and from 1783 to 1784. He was justice of the peace at Gloucester from 1776 to 1795. George Washington appointed Whittemore, a Federalist, surveyor of the port of Gloucester in August 1789 and inspector of the port in 1792 (Executive Journal, 1:9, 103).In frame, no glass 12"x8 1/2"x1".
