Description
Robert Tomlinson is recorded as working in Dublin circa 1805 at 123 Capel Street. Octagonal to round barrel separated by a wedding ring at girdle and marked with "(Crown) / P", "RT" in a lozenge, and "(Crown) / V" proofs on offset octagonal flat and "DC - 675" on top flat, indicating registration in Dublin City post-1843. Simple stepped lock with teat at rear marked "TOMLINSON" in center, with swan neck cock and bridled pan. Barrel flares to approximately 1 - 3/8" at muzzle and is separated from main tube portion by a raised ring at girdle and further cannon turned at muzzle. Horn tipped ramrod, probably the original, with worm at reverse, retained by a single ferrule with raised edges and feeding into a reinforced mouth. Wide brass trigger guard with raised edges and an acorn finial. Brass buttplate retained by a pair of iron screws. CONDITION: Very good as found condition. Lock is an untouched chocolate patina, with Tomlinson marking somewhat obscured. Brass is a deep rich untouched color with some verdigris forming. Stock is very good with some bumps and bruises throughout, and one large spliced repair at toe. Buttplate has a consistent layer of verdigris and screws are patinated. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent. Irish guns are rare and this blunderbuss is a great example.
