An Irish Brass-Barrelled Flintlock Blunderbuss
By Blackwell Of Dublin, Late 18th Century
With earlier English barrel in two stages, flared at the muzzle and stamped in front of the girdle with Irish registration mark 'WE 2084' for County Wicklow, octagonal breech becoming polygonal, signed 'H. Crisp' along the top flat and decorated with strawberry foliage in front of the ramp, the latter cut to form a back-sight, plain tang, signed flat bevelled lock and cock, figured full stock (some old worming) with apron around the barrel tang, brass mounts of regulation type including butt-plate stamped with the same Irish registration mark on the tang, turned ramrod-pipes, and brass-capped wooden ramrod, London proof marks and Crisp's barrelsmith's mark

Footnotes:
Five Blackwells, presumably all the same family, are recorded working in Dublin in the late 18th century. Three of the five worked at Great Ship Street including Katherine. Eliza is recorded at Fishamble Street

Henry Crisp was apprenticed to Humphrey Pye in 1668 and free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1676. He registered his mark the following year and was gunmaker to Ordnance and Furbisher at the Tower of London between 1680 and 1707. He died in 1710
