Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A forged-iron axe head of a combat-ready form known as a skeggox (literally "bearded axe") with a thick butt end, a circular hafting shaft, and a sturdy neck. The tall blade has a sharpened edge that courses down to the drooping or "bearded" tip which, by design, increased the surface area with which a strike would connect with its target. Minor nicks to socketing shaft, neck, and blade, with light pitting and oxidation, otherwise intact and very good. Covered in dark stabilization material to mitigate oxidation. Nice patina throughout.
