Item Details
Description
3 Sepia Photos of New York City by Frank S. Savastano. This is a lot of three sepia-toned photographs of the busy New York City streets circa the early 20th century. They are stamped with the name "Frank S. Savastano," who was a photographer known for his gelatin silver prints of New York City. One photograph has "No. 12, 4-25-28" written in the lower left corner over what appears to be a canon, or something else on wheels. The photo depicts a bustling city intersection complete with shops, pedestrians, a few early automobiles, and one horse-drawn carriage. In the bottom right corner, there is a stamp that says "Photo by Frank S. Savastano, New York." Another lively photo is also dated 4-25-28 and is labeled "No. 8." It depicts a different intersection with more cars, pedestrians, and businesses, including the same parking garage sign that was in the previous photo, although the building looks different. It is possible that this photo was taken on the same street as the previous one, but simply a block over. The same Savastano stamp is in the lower right corner. The remaining photo was taken a few years later, and has "#15, 3-12-3" written in white in the lower left-hand corner. Beside the date, it says "Forsyth St., Wall-Canal St." in black ink. The foreground of the photograph is dotted with what appears to be construction materials, perhaps cinder blocks and oil drums, next to a set of wooden stairs. The background is busy: the street is lined with cars, with pedestrians darting across the street and down sidewalks. There are signs for jewelers, a clothing store, and other shops. In the far background is a suspended bridge that looks to be for a train. The Savastano stamp is again present in the lower right corner, although it is considerably harder to make out. This trio is a unique piece of history, and would be excellent apartment decor for someone who lives in modern-day Chinatown, particularly at the intersection of Forsyth St. and Canal St., where the wall in the foreground of the last photo is still standing today.

Dimensions are 7.5 in h x 9.75 in w. Condition is very good. There is minor wear to the photograph edges. The photo taken at Forsyth St. and Canal St. has a small loss at the lower right corner, beside the photographer's stamp. Please call or email for a detailed condition report.
