The Indian Captive, Zadock Steele, Antique Leather Book. This is an antique copy of The Indian Captive; or a Narrative of the Captivity and Sufferings of Zadock Steele. The title page says it has been related by Zadock Steele himself, and the prefix is an account of the Burning of Royalton. It was published by the author in Montpelier, Vermont in 1818. The handsome leather binding is brown, and has the remnants of a gold gilt title on the spine. The inside has a cursive inscription written in pencil, as well as a handmade bookmark depicting the silhouette of a woman. This book is the account of Zadock Steele, who was captured by a British Lieutenant and Native Americans in Raldolph, Vermont in 1780, transported to Canada, and turned over as a captive to British troops. He was a prisoner for two years before escaping. This harrowing tale is both culturally and historically important; an antique copy of this book is truly a treasure.
