Description
Unusual Rookwood Standard glaze vase featuring a portrait of a beggar woman standing beside a brick wall, her hand outstretched in a plaintive gesture. Painted by Bruce Horsfall in 1893, the vase stands 6 7/8 inches tall is marked with the company logo, the date, shape number 679, an impressed W for white clay, the incised monogram of the artist and red acquisition marks from the Cincinnati Art Museum indicating it to have been one of the many pieces on loan to CAM from Rookwood. It is listed in Burt’s “2,292 Pieces of Early Rookwood Pottery in the Cincinnati Art Museum in 1916” on page 103, entry 19 as “Vase - 679 - B-- Stand. Early Figure Work.” Fine overall crazing with nice blue in the woman’s shawl.
