Item Details
Description
"The Gold Hunters in Europe, or The Dead Alive," by William H. Thomes, published by Lee and Shepard, Boston, 1875, illustrated by John Andrew & Son.

Original hard cover, decorated gold stamped spine (a little wear), 5.1/4" x 7.3/4", 384 pages, small stain on title page (see picture), very good condition.

Adventure novel involving dangerous Fenian, gold, whiskey stills, thieves, an earl and a countess, and Emperor Napoleon.

"Those who have pursued "The Gold Hunters, or Adventures in Australia," and "The Bushrangers, or Life in Australia," will recollect several prominent persons who were conspicuous in all encounters with desperate robbers in Victoria and in other sections of the province. These characters will figure quite extensively in this volume.....Murden, the bold and rash, thorough English in all his habits and ideas,... who would have died rather than desert a comrade in distress; Hezekiah Hopeful, of Hillsboro' County, New Hampshire, the mechanical genius, who invented a quartz-crusher, and by its aid made a fortune in Australia - a genuine representative of the Yankee, prompt to fall in love with a pretty face, full of pluck and all the dogged energy of his race, --...lastly, the writer...will tell you what we saw, what adventures we encountered in foreign countries, and other matters of interest.

All these things will be told in a straightforward matter-of-fact manner..."

William Henry Thomes [1824-1895], was an author who spent much of his early adult years traveling between California and Boston. He eventually settled in Boston and worked for several years as a reporter for the 'Boston Herald'.
