Roman Bronze Mirror w/ Woman's Portrait
Roman Bronze Mirror w/ Woman's Portrait
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A striking cast-bronze, two-part mirror with a decorative verso featuring a lovely high relief portrait of a young woman. Its back has a series of incised concentric circles and would once have had a reflective surface inlaid over it. The woman's face is turned to the left, and she has elaborately coiffured hair gathered in a decorative band, with a plait hanging down her neck. A studded necklace and collar are visible at the base of her neck, and she has a pretty face with a long, straight nose and full lips. Who is the woman in the portrait - might she be the original owner of this mirror, perhaps given to her on her wedding day or buried with her? When opened, the mirror halves reveal a short Latin inscription highlighted with black ink. Size: 4.7" W (11.9 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Mirrors are often associated with women, and specifically women's religion, in the Roman Empire: devotees of Isis carried mirrors for rituals, for example. This style of mirror is similar to ones found in the Vesuvius area, and was probably made in Campania. More specifically, see the mirror with the bust portrait of a youth from the treasure of the House of Menander, excavated from Pompeii.

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
