Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. SAVAGE & OTTINGER, photographers. CDV of Shoshone Chief Washakie. Ca 1865.

2 1/4 x 3 5/8 in. CDV on cardstock mount, which is affixed to 3 1/8 x 5 7/8 in. paper mount with partial manuscript letter affixed to verso (image a bit light). A studio portrait of Shoshone Chief Washakie seated in a chair, with a hat resting on his left knee. He wears prominent earrings and a large medallion around his neck. Identified on paper mount, with a pencil inscription reading, "The large medal worn by him / was given by the President of US the / only person from whom he would / receive a present. Washkie [sic] was a / grand fine fellow."

Washakie (ca 1804-1900) was a lifelong friend to settlers of the American West, assisting them with travel through his treacherous homeland terrain. In 1876, he joined forces with the military as both a scout and warrior, serving under General George Crook to help push Crazy Horse into the Powder River Country. Praised by Presidents Grant and Arthur, Chief Washakie was buried with full military honors.
