Description
Two Judge Roy Bean Photographs, Printed 1st Half of the 1900s
Two black and white images, both measuring 5" x 7", of Texas judge Roy Bean. The first is captioned, "Judge Roy Bean and his family, and old photo made at [scratched out], Texas." A portrait-style image of Bean with his four children, Zulema, Laura, Roy Jr., and Sam. The eldest daughter appears to have been misidentified on verso as his wife, Virginia Chavez. The second image is captioned, "Judge Roy Bean, sitting in an old-time two-wheel cart, in front of his JERSEY 'LILLY' SALOON, and COURT-HOUSE." Both images have copyright stamps on verso, reading "This print is from the 2500 negatives pertaining to the Western frontier, owned outright by frontier Pix, 114 Santa Fe, Houston, Texas. Any reproduction, copying, morgue use, etc., is forbidden, and our authorization must be had each time used." Both images have minor soiling (more so on verso) and lightly bumped corners. Very fine and great for display.
In 1866, the 40-year-old Roy Bean married 18-year-old Maria Anastacia Virginia Chavez. The marriage was an abusive one, but the couple had four children together before divorcing.
