Samuel Clemens Check Signed While Writing "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"
Measuring 6.75" x 2.875", Hartford, Connecticut, dated June 18, 1875. Signed "Samuel L. Clemens", a First National Bank of Hartford check No. 134, directing $27.00 to be paid to F. Bubser. It is unknown what the purpose of this payment was, but the payment recipient may have been Hartford native, Fidel Bubser. Stamped "PAID" on front with additional bank stamps on verso. Endorsed by Bubser on verso. With uneven edges and faint soiling. Boldly signed by Clemens.
Samuel L. Clemens, better known to the world as Mark Twain, moved with his family to Hartford, Connecticut in 1873, he had a home built next door to Harriet Beecher Stowe. During the next seventeen years spent there, Twain wrote some of his most famous works, including "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", "The Prince and the Pauper", "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", and "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court".
