Description
13th-14th century AD. A substantial fragment of a large shallow bronze bowl with perpendicular rim, concentric rings of low-relief ornament comprising an outer ring with radiating repeated panel motif; band of hatched foliage with reserved Kufic script; band of hatched foliage with reserved annulets and running animals; band of scrolled foliage; band of Kufic script reserved on a hatched field. Cf. von Gladiss, A., Glanz und Substanz. Metallarbeitung in der Sammlung des Museums für Islamische Kunst, Berlin, 2012, item 1, for similar decorative scheme. 495 grams, 30.5cm (12"). Property of a London collector; from her family's private collection; formerly with a London gallery; acquired in the 1990s. These beautiful engraved dishes and their detailed ornamentation were known from Damascus to Baghdad. A bowl in the Berlin Museum displays similar decorative forms composed of interlace with animals and horsemen.
