Steuben Engraved Glass Lion Hunter Bowl by Sidney Waugh, circa 1935 Marks: Sidney Waugh, Steuben 4-1/2 x 12-1/4 inches (11.4 x 31.1 cm) Following Frederick Carder’s departure in 1932, Steuben began to phase out colored glass and focus on highly refractive colorless glass achieved through a newly developed formula. The firm hired a team of designers, including industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teaque and sculptor Sidney Waugh, to contribute designs for etched and engraved decoration to enliven the new colorless glass pieces. Waugh is best known for his engraved designs, which often featured stylized Art Deco figures or fauna.
