Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), Central Anasazi, Southern Cibola, White Mountains Red Ware, Four-Mile type, ca. 1325 to 1400 CE. A marvelous pottery bowl exhibiting a hemispherical form with a round yet stable base and circular, rolled rim. Adorned in black and white pigments atop a vibrant orange-red ground, the ancient vessel boasts the abstract image of a thunderbird on its interior. The avian creature presents a stylized form with long, curved wings, a slender body, a sizeable, triangular tail, and a petite head with 2 annular eyes, 4 extending crest feathers, and an elongated, tapered beak. Interestingly, the body of the bird is comprised of geometric designs that served as symbols for the ancient Ancestral Puebloan people: his triangular tail represents power, the step motif on his tail signifies a cloud, the linear striations are for earth or land, the zigzags represent lightning, and the dots on his crest feather and below his tail symbolize rain. A thick black band with a white border encircles the interior rim of the gorgeous vessel. Alternatively, the exterior of the vessel displays a broad register of a Vitruvian type of scroll pattern just below the rim. Size: 9.25" in diameter x 4" H (23.5 cm x 10.2 cm)
