Description
20th-16th century BC. A u-section plaque, roughly oval-shaped in plan, bearing two stylised dog figures in relief, fighting; accompanied by a handwritten scholarly note issued by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'oval terracotta plaque, joined from two pieces, shows two mastiff-type dogs with collars fighting. Old Babylonian, c.2000-1600 B.C. 7.5 x 11cm.' 155 grams, 11cm (4 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired in the 1970s; accompanied by a unsigned hand written scholarly note by late Professor Wilfrid George Lambert FBA (1926-2011), historian, archaeologist, and specialist in Assyriology and Near Eastern archaeology.
