Description
Eugene Berman (1899-1972), "Leptis Magnus: Medusa E La Mano Sepolta", translates to, "The Buried Hand", depicting ruins of Leptis Magna, often considered one of the most beautiful cities of the Roman Empire, now in modern day Libya, 1969, watercolor and gouache on paper, sight: 19.25 x 26.25"

Eugene Berman was born in Russia and was well known for Baroque stage set designs, most notably for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Berman helped lead the Neo-Romantic artists in France, defending abstract movements including Cubism and Futurism. Berman received his art education in Germany, Switzerland, anf France. His first exhibition in America was held at Julian Levy Art Gallery in New York. Berman was a war refugee in 1935 and moved to New York City, and eventually Los Angeles. He designed for hundreds of Metropolitan Opera performances and European Opera companies, including set designs for Rigoletto, Don Giovanni, and Othello. Berman retired in Rome in 1957.​​​​​​​
