Description
Howard Eliot Hodgkin (1932-2017), "Nick's Room", 1977, signed, hand-colored lithograph, numbered 39/100, 20.375 x 24.25"
Howard Eliot Hodgkin was born in England in 1932 to a distinguished Quaker family comprised of scientists, connoisseurs, collectors and classifiers. Among his ancestors is the physician who defined Hodgkin's disease and the father or meteorology. Hodgkin spent a majority of his childhood in Long Island, New York, and received an education from the Camberwell School for a year, and then the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham for four years. He became an art teacher at Charthouse, Bath Academy, and Chelsea School of Art until 1972. Hodgkin's artistic style is representative of his own life, often through using chromatic, abstract measures, dots, swirls, waves, and unusual scale. His first major solo show was in New York, and it wasn't until the age of fifty-two when his exhibition in the British Pavilion of the Venice Biennale peaked interests of the art world.
