Private Collection, MN
Hodgkin created artworks that were at once private moments of emotion influenced by light and space, often resulting in chromatic abstract renditions. He once stated, ÒI paint representational pictures of emotional situations. Hodgkins typical process involved painting on wood in an extremely slow manner involving repainting. In ÒPut Out More Flags,Ó there are broad bands of crescent-shaped lines seen over a green arch. Yellow, blue, and orange garner attention which is also called upon by the speckled black area. Large forms layer over one another, a visual point of interest that is heightened by color translucencies revealing the continuation of individual shapes. This sense of depth is reiterated by the slivers of white between forms. The beautifully torn edges of the paper contrast with the clean perimeter of colored forms in the center and further enhance the texture of the artwork. Good condition, full sheet printed to edges, float mounted, slight undulation to sheet, 1/8 inch tear along the lower edge of the date. Not examined out of frame.
