Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A beautiful poncho of a broad rectangular form that is tightly woven from camelid (alpaca or llama) wool fibers in polychrome hues of burnt umber, seafoam, black, khaki, chocolate, forest green, maroon, beige, and cream. The interior of the poncho features several colorful rows of inversely corresponding waveform motifs outlined in dark thread while the innermost fringe and exterior fringe display stepped patterns formed by spiraling rectangles. The exterior is also lined with loose fringe to create a flowing presentation. A large hole in the center was meant for the wearer's head to slip through, allowing the poncho to drape atop any additional clothing they would be wearing. Poncho has not been examined outside of display frame. Losses to some interior and exterior areas as well as neckline. Fraying and loosening to some threads, with minor staining and fading to thread colors, and creasing in several areas. Nice preservation to colors throughout composition.
