Description
19th c. Fire Society Bucket with Handle, having a black, red and gold painted surface, with member's name "Oliver Train", "No. 1" (possibly to designate one of two buckets), "1818" (the society's founding date), and "Energetic Fire Society" in a red oval, also with swag and chains, 14" high (to top of handle lugs), 8" diam. Paint losses; surface dryness, cracks and damage; repair to one side of handle.Up until the Civil War, some American communities had fraternal fire fighting organizations that were created to protect the possessions and property of its members. When an alarm sounded, members were required to quickly respond and bring with them two buckets and two large bags (for removing valuables from the burning building).
