Description
A Cast bronze crucifix with african aesthetics and signs of handling and wear. Nkangi kidtu crosses were used as objects of prestige and power. Local chiefs commissioned the creation of crucifixes as symbols of their position and used them during mabondo ya nkangi enthronement ceremonies.It is also believed that nkangi kidtu crucifixes had the ability to protect against witchcraft, illnesses, drought and properties that ensured fertility of women and the land. Considered an emblem of spiritual authority and power, the Christian cross was integrated into Kongo ancestral cults and burial rituals, and was believed to contain magical protective properties. In Kongo culture, crosses were believed to intervene in matters ranging from illness and fertility to rainfall. The Cross Measures 7 inches tall. The Images on the cross arms are praying devotees, the figure below is the Virgin Mary. Provenance: A private New Jersey Collection.
