Description
This is a Large antique Tarahumara Indian Pottery Olla. Tarahumara Indian pottery is a classic primitive style pottery. Located in the Sierra Madre mountains of northern Mexico. According to the Museum owner Paul Hendricks, He acquired this vessel in situ in Copper Canyon Mexico in 1970 direct from a Priest who witnessed a healing ceremony involving a Young child who has a enlarged and infected stomach. The Priest told the Museum curator that the vessel filled with maggots as the child's stomach went down and was healed. This healing ceremony took place during Semana Santa or Easter Weekend ceremonies. The vessel measures 12 inches tall and shows obvious field use and wear and is likely an early 20th century example. provenance: Part of the permanent display at the Museum of Oddities, Metamora , Indiana.
