Nathaniel Dirk (American, 1895-1961). Watercolor, ca. 1930s. A lovely beach scene - probably depicting a site in New England such as Rockport, Marblehead, or Gloucester - by American artist Nathaniel Dirk. The composition beckons the eye with beachgoers walking along the sandy coastline, one wading near the shore, a lovely sailboat in the middle distance, and charming buildings on the opposite shore. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dirk studied at both the Art Students League of New York and the Art Institute of Chicago. His teachers included Max Weber, Boardman Robinson, and Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League. Dirk also taught at the League during the summer of 1939 and from 1947 until 1951. Size: 7.5" L x 9" W (19 cm x 22.9 cm)

A similar Nathaniel Dirk beach scene entitled "Boats at Rest" (1936 - Accession Number 39.19) is in the collection of the Whitney Museum of Art.
