Description
1779 Japanese Samurai Katana Swords New Blade Shinto Bengi Natae Kamada RARE

An interesting Edo and Meiji woodblock-print of New Blade. Shintobengi is a study on Japanese swords published in 1784 by Kamata Natae, a samurai and a sword researcher in the late Edo period. His work is renown among Japanese sword enthusiasts as one of the original works for swords that helped define what distinguished a new sword from an old sword. At the beginning of the book, Sword theory, he describes his ideas on the appraisal of swords and their differences with earlier periods. It describes the history of swordsmiths and connoisseurs at the end of the book.

This rare edition is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations throughout of different blades masters as well as the hamon, the pattern created along the edge of the blade in its finale quenching, often considered the most important part of the blade!
