Description
1856 Japanese Katana Samurai Old Sword Koto Illustrated Ozeki Nagatomi
An interesting Edo woodblock-print of ‘Pocket List of Old Swords.’ This pocket-sized list of ‘old swords’ is a copy of the ancient secret manuscript handed down through the Honami family. The term ‘Koto’ or ‘Old Sword’ is a reference to swords created 900 – 1596. The swords listed in this book are from the Mid Heian period to late Momoyama period. They are considered the pinnacle of the Japanese Sword including swordsmiths such as Masamune, Japan's greatest swordsmith. The typical sword of that period was the tachi. It is somewhat longer but otherwise like the katana with many Katanas being made by shortening a tachi. Early tachi examples had uneven curves with the deepest section of the curve at the hilt being made to function as cavalry swords.
This rare 1856 edition is written in a column handwritten and type format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations throughout of different blades and the blades engravings of dragons, tridents, flames and more!
