Description
1886 Japanese Samurai Warrior Kamikaze Kusunoki Nantoki Illustrated Woodblock

An interesting Meiji woodblock-print of ‘Ehon Nantoki,’ called ‘The Illustrated Tale of Kusunoki Masashige,’ illustrated by the famous artist Hayami Shungyosai. Hayami was an author, painter and illustrator, whose art is found in museums all around the world. ‘Nantoki’ tells of Kusunoki Masashige, a 14th-century samurai who who battled the Kamakura shogunate trying to return Japan to Emperor Go-Daigo. The Emperor ordered him to march into the Battle of Minatogawa against Masashige’s advice, which he dutifully accepted taking his smaller army into death.

Kusunoki "stands in the history of his country as the ideal figure of a warrior, compact of civil and military virtues in a high degree" (Sansom).

Neo-Confucian scholars and samurai created the legend of Kusunoki and enshrined him as a patriotic hero, who symbolized loyalty, courage, and devotion to the Emperor, becoming a type of patron saint in World War II to kamikaze pilots.

These volumes from the 19th century work are handwritten in column format containing excellent illustrations throughout of different scenes of large-scale battles, samurai conflicts, courtesans, ship wars, and more!
