Ad for American Publing Co. on last page. Mixed points on page 242 with line 20 missing word and line 21 has no missing word. This particular point being somewhat in dispute as to accuracy of state. So for the most part this is a First edition - First state. That said the binding is unusual as it was done not by the Publisher but by The Normal School Hampton Virginia later to become Hampton Institute a school designed to give ex slaves commercial trades education. The Marbled paper over boards and brown cloth do seem to coincide in time with 1872 but could be slightly later perhaps given as a project to a ex slave to learn his bookbinding skills. As a vintage binding it is in Fair to Good condition, still holding but worn with hinges exposed but still holding. Wear at edges and corners. Rubber stamp of Normal School Press Printing and Bookbinding behind cover on endpage. Autobiography of Samuel Langhorne Clemens - Mark Twain and his adventures out West in America. contains his views on Miners, Cowboys, Railroad workers and Chinese Labor, ex slaves, Ranchers, Native Indians, and his opinions on Hawaii and Pacific Islands and the myriad of peoples he met on this adventure of a Lifetime written with his wit and humor. Arguably his most important book. Top Shelf Gray Unit
