"Hawkshaw the Detective" was a topper to "The Captain and the Kids." The eponymous hero, Hawkshaw, was a private eye inspired by Sherlock Holmes. Indeed, in his first incarnation, the character was named "Sherlocko the Monk," and was rechristened "Hawkshaw" after Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, threatened legal action. "Watso," the pseuodonym of artist Gus Mager, is an allusion to Holmes's friend and partner, John Watson.
