Screwball cartoonist Bill Holman got loads of mileage out of the nonsense word "Foo," which sharp-eyed readers will find embedded not once but twice in this strip. It's likely that Holman's use of "Foo" inspired the name of Robert and Charles Crumb's early self-published comic book. It's possible that Holman's penchant for zany signs crammed into the backgrounds of his panels influenced Bill Elder, who was developing his style in the 1930s and '40s when Holman's strip was extremely popular.
