The publication of an Underground cartoonist by a major publishing house, in a hardcover edition no less, was a significant milestone in Crumb's career and in the acceptance of UG comix by the literati. Mainstream recognition came with its own set of problems, however: "When Viking Press published R. Crumb's Head Comix in 1968, they made the mistake of tampering with his artwork, including placing band-aids over a whistling cunt in 'Ultra Super Modernistic Comics.' Crumb vowed that from then on he would work only in the underground." — Patrick Rosenkranz, Rebel Visions: The Underground Comix Revolution, 1963-1975. Fantagraphics: 2002.
