Description
Jimi Hendrix: Shirt worn on stage
A shirt of pale pink satin, the wrap shirt with tie fastening and voluminous cuffs, worn by Jimi Hendrix on stage during a performance on the BBC Television Show Happening For Lulu, aired on January 4, 1969; with a letter concerning the provenance; with a Guitar Player magazine, April, 2010, featuring a photograph of Hendrix wearing the shirt on Happening For Lulu; and a letter confirming the provenance.
Footnotes:
The Jimi Hendrix Experience's appearance on Happening for Lulu was somewhat controversial; the band was slated to perform 'Voodoo Child' and 'Hey Joe,' with Lulu scheduled to sing with the band on the latter. However, a few bars into the first verse of 'Hey Joe,' Hendrix abruptly stopped and announced 'We'd like to stop playing this rubbish and dedicate a song to the Cream, regardless of what kind of group they may be in. We dedicate this to Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce,' launching into a version of 'Sunshine of Your Love' in a tribute to Cream who had announced their split earlier that day. According to Mitch Mitchell, the atmosphere at the BBC Studio was 'so straight it was only natural that we would try to combat that atmosphere by having a smoke in our dressing room ...' The band played through the time that Lulu was due to join them on stage and well over the talking time scheduled at the end of their performance, ending with the show's producer, Stanley Dorfman, tearing his hair out and silently screaming at the band whilst pointing at his watch. It was a blistering performance but the band's antics landed them a lifetime ban from the BBC. Hendrix wears this shirt throughout the controversial performance.

The vendor acquired this shirt from Melinda Merryweather, who was a friend of Hendrix's and appeared in the 1970 documentary film Rainbow Bridge.
