Music Memorabilia

On August 3, 1983, at the First Avenue Nightclub, Minneapolis - Prince walked on to the stage in his hometown and performed the first-ever live rendition of Purple Rain. Joined for the first time by his new band - The Revolution - this was the turning point in his career, as the critically acclaimed artist became the global phenomenon he is known as today. Renowned for his sense of fashion, that night Prince wore a full-length stage coat of black grosgrain, the only one of its kind ever made, which now comes to Bonhams Music Memorabillia sale on October 28 in Los Angeles. It is estimated to sell for $80,000-120,000. Bonhams Director of Entertainment Memorabilia, Helen Hall, said: "We are incredibly proud and excited to be offering this one-of-a-kind coat that was worn by Prince at a pivotal point in his career, the first time he performed "Purple Rain" live to an audience. We believe that this is the earliest Prince costume ever to be offered on the auction market; it is an incredibly rare piece and captures the quintessential style of Prince at this early stage of his career."
