Leather in the seat section of the saddle is a period replacement and is void of its original quilted pattern. This was common practice to replace the quilted padded leather since by its inherent nature the padded leather did not have a long lifespan. Brass furniture throughout.

Thornton Grimsley was a saddle maker in St. Louis, MO. These saddles had deep-seated trees and a very high cantle that were inspired by Spanish/Mexican saddles that were popular at the time. Grimsley saddles were used by General U.S. Grant, General Thomas Sherman and General Robert E. Lee. [See Caba, 1982: 35-45. See also Dorsey and McPheeters, 1999: 19-21.]
