Item Details
Description
Five Embroidered Fancy Dress Hats or Caps. Comprising: A lady's bonnet, with lace trim around a wire frame with silver wrapped and silver-gilt lame trim; and a broad silk brocade ribbon; a gentleman's cap of deep brown velvet with extensive gilt-thread and gilt-wrapped trim, with red silk brocade side panels; two young girls' caps, embroidered with gold threads in foliate designs, with red glass beads; and colorful silk trim ribbons; and a baby's cap, embroidered with gilt thread shells surrounding yellow ground sides, embroidered with folorful flowers. Plus a later black ground ribbon, with silver-wrapped trim. (Six articles total). The lady's hat with black in "GO" in script to right hand front interior. Circa 1900 in 18th Century style. {Approximate dimensions: 9" x 9" x 9", the lady's bonnet.}. Provenance: The Estate of Gertrude Parker, founder of The San Francisco Craft and Folk Art Museum, which opened in 1982 in a small Richmond District home. Gertrude Parker was a fiber artist and sculptor with a belief that craft art was as legitimate a form as fine art painting. As a teenager, Parker narrowly escaped the Nazis by train out of her native Vienna. In her new home in the Bay Area, Parker trusted her hunch about folk art and she was right. Parker's museum outgrew the Richmond District house and moved to Fort Mason before landing downtown as the renamed Museum of Craft and Folk Art. Gertrude Parkerís own art can be found in the permanent collections of the Oakland Museum of California and the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive. She also left behind a significant personal collection of surrealist and abstract art which will eventually have a home in a new gallery and museum in San Rafael. {Condition: Overall condition of these hats and caps is quite good. The stitching keeping the lace attached to wire frame, lady's bonnet, has broken, and thus some sections of the lace are loose. Men's cap red silk with some fraying; minor fraying and dropped stitches to all.}.
