Description
North Carolina Currency
Popular "Liberty Cap over Altar" Vignette April 2 1776 North Carolina Two Dollars and an Half PMG Very Fine-20
North Carolina. April 2 1776. Halifax Issue. Two Dollars and an Half. "Liberty Cap over Altar" vignette. PMG graded Very Fine-20.
Fr. NC-159b. A scarce "1776" date Revolutionary War period, very historic note, it's odd denomination also tied with the important and highly popular patriotic "Liberty Cap over Altar" vignette design. This wonderful variety vignette shows a hand holding a "Liberty Cap" on a Pole above an Altar with the motto LIBERTAS & NATALE SOLUM (Liberty and our native land) in text engraved below. Signatures of William Williams, J. Webb, David Sumner, and perhaps William Haywood (worn and hard to read) within its full margins. PMG correctly notes that this note was severed and reattached (near center, not with tape) with a small piece of contemporary newspaper print adhered as reinforcement on its otherwise very clean blank reverse. The historic "Liberty Cap" on a Pole held above an Altar is very sharp in detail and has pleasing eye appeal.
