Clipped to the front free endpaper is a sheet signed and inscribed by Eliza London Shepard: "To my dear friends Nan and "Lady Isabelle," how would you like to take a cruise in a real boat like the Snark? Let's do it some day what say you? All Love, Elizabeth London Shep[ard], Valley of the Moon. Dec. 25 '27." Above the inscription is a photograph of Jack London and Charmian pouring over a map. Tipped on to the backside of the sheet is a check issued by The Merchant's National Bank of San Francisco signed by Jack London. The sheet may have been excised from another copy of the book, as the text at the right side is trimmed a bit. Eliza Shepard was Jack London's beloved step-sister who came to the ranch in 1910, acting as the ranch superintendent and continued until her death in 1939.
