Description
A beautiful Roman bronze serving vessel, c. 1st - 2nd Century AD, with wide, curved pouring spout, the handle attaching at three points and decorated with floral devices, the central portion in the form of a stylized acanthus leaf with a canine head at top. The back of the handle is decorated with the wide face of a young satyr, indicating this could be a serving vessel for wine. At the bottom is a disc base decorated with turned concentric grooves. A marvelous piece with attractive glossy green-brown patination. 8 1/2 in x 5 1/2 in x 5 1/2 in (21.5 x 14 x 14cm). Purchased in the 1970's from the collection of Hoyt B. DeShields, JR of Decatur, MD.
