Description
A very nice Japanese ivory cane of rats and a crab. The elephant ivory handle is 3 1/4" high and 1" at its widest. It depicts in fine detail, a family of three rats and a crab. The crab is clutching the tail of one of the rats in its claw while it is scrambling to get away. It is a classic Japanese scene of animals in conflict, skillfully rendered. There is a 1" gold-filled collar inscribed: " E.A.Curtis" on a hardwood shaft fashioned with six sides. A 1" burnished brass and iron ferrule complete the piece. The overall length is 37 1/2" and the condition is very good. It was probably fashioned in America with an imported handle, ca 1895, and it is a very good example of the kind. Estimate: $1000-$1500.
