Description
A very good ivory cane of a French dandy or Incroyable. The elephant ivory handle is 4" high and 1 1/2" at its widest. It depicts a French dandy in fancy dress and wearing a distinctive tri-cornered hat of an "Incroyable" standing inside a half-moon pedestal. He is holding a bottle of wine in one hand. ("Incroyable" was the name given to very stylish men and woman of the French Revolutionary times who dressed in an extraordinary, studied manner and talked in an unusual way. They would remove the "r" in some of their expressions. "Incroyable" came from their speech affectations when they would repeat at any time "c'est incoyable!") There is a 1/4" lined silver collar on a dark exotic wood shaft with a 7/8" replaced brass ferrule. The overall length is 37" and the condition is very good with some in-filling in some of the ivory. It is perhaps French, ca 1885, and it is a very interesting character example. Estimate: $1200-$1800.
