Description
Settle binding.- Settle (Elkanah) Eusebia Triumphans. The Hanover Succession to the Imperial Crown of England, an heroick poem, half-title, foxing and occasional browning, light damp-staining to endpapers, contemporary panelled calf with gilt central arms with three griffin heads, wide floriate and leafy roll border with flower tool at corners, neatly rebacked in red morocco, rubbed with some surface abrasion, [Foxon S255], folio, for the author, 1704.
⁂ An example of an elaborately tooled Settle binding, commissioned by the author to accompany his verse. From around 1700 Settle earned much of his living and notoriety from sending copies of his verses to wealthy individuals elaborately bound with their arms to the covers. If the book was returned Settle would have the arms altered and the book sent to a new potential patron.
