A remarkable copy of Lyrical Ballads beautifully bound at the Doves Bindery. The publication of Lyrical Ballads is often described as "the inaugural event of the Romantic period," and this preferred edition of the work contains the first printing of Wordsworth's famous Preface, "the revolutionary manifesto of the romantic poets" (Printing and the Mind of Man 256). Lyrical Ballads ; is also justly famous for having contained the first appearance of Coleridge's wildly imaginative and entrancing poem "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner", and it here appears with considerable changes from its initial 1798 printing. The second volume with the first state issue points: p. 209 with last word of footnote in the middle of the page; p. 210 with 10 lines only; p. 211 with 19 lines, ending with "he thought again"; p. 212 with 19 lines, beginning with "And his heart fail'd him". ; An important book, joining the dawn of the Romantic period with a lovely binding from the high point of the Arts and Crafts movement.
