Description

Famous 19th C. French Photographer Nadar ALS

A 1p autograph letter in French signed by Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (1820-1910), better known by his professional name "Nadar," as "Nadar" at lower right. N.d., n.p. Inscribed on the first page of custom bifold stationery paper embossed with Nadar's monogram and motto "Quand même" [trans: "All the same"] at top. The inner pages are blank. Expected wear including light paper folds, else near fine. 3.875" x 6.125." Accompanied by a photo-reproduction of Nadar's famous portrait photograph of the Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix, along with a souvenir 15-cent American stamp celebrating photography. Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

Nadar wrote an unknown recipient this thoughtful sympathy card, translated in full:

"Assuredly I couldn't say all, but have I said enough of what I can and isn't that [already] several words too much?

I would be very happy if I could at least make people understand the respect that was due to one who deserved so much of it and the fraternal tenderness that I always felt towards him.

My wife joins me in expressing to you, very dear Madame, our profound and sympathetic condolences.

Nadar."

Nadar was one of the most important photographers of nineteenth-century Europe. After he opened his photographic studio in Paris in the 1850s, he photographed the most prestigious artists, actors, musicians, authors, politicians, and personalities of the day, including Eugène Delacroix (shown here), Sarah Bernhardt, Claude Debussy, and Émile Zola.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
