Northern Plains Catlinite Pipe Bowls
first half 20th century
lot of 3, includes:
figural pipe bowl carved in the likeness of a bear
length 2-1/4 inches
pipe bowl with incised designs near stem connection, otherwise minimalist design
length 9 inches
pipe bowl with lead inlay and an old break with repair
length 7-1/2 inches
Collected by Paul Cowles (1945-2020), Rush, New York.
Cowles was a lifetime collector of First Nations Art and Artifacts, as well as fine firearms and other militaria and Americana. As a US Army Veteran serving in SE Asia in the early and mid-1960's many of his collecting interests revolved around the US military and sporting arms.
