Description
Native American, Western United States, Plains region, Lakota (Sioux), ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of leather and glass beaded leather pouches, used as decorative tobacco bags. The larger leather pouch is comprised of two circular panels sewn three quarters along edge to create the pocket. Holes for a cinching strap or cord are pierced along the top. A pair of leather tassels and 4 glass beads adorn the front. The verso has handwritten initials "L.A." and the year "1904." The other purse is completely adored with line stitches forming a flower motif on the front. The verso is outlined with beads and contains a central cruciform shape. The motifs are composed of hundreds of beads in red, pale blue, cobalt, yellow, purple, black, amber, green, pink, and white. The beading must have taken hours to complete. Condition
The leather of the larger pouch is cracked, fraying, tearing, and has losses to the peripheries and cords, as shown. The seams are unraveling, and the panels are creased and misshapen. The glass beads are intact, and the verso has faint written initials and date. The beaded pouch is in good condition. The leather is stiff and not flexible, so the pouch cannot be opened. Some areas of discoloration to beads and leather. The beading is secure and intact, and excellent. Both displayed in Riker case.
