Description
One of a kind, monumental size, highly repoussed and detailed 17th C coin silver tankard with standing, roaring detailed lion finial holding coins - top coin dated 1591 - bottom coin dated 1646 with ornate garland details. The body of the tankard is highly repoussed with three dimensional scenic figures with a beautiful large garland covered nude mermaid figural handle and the three footed base is supported with three roaring crowned well-detailed lions each supporting a scroll. It is inscribed in Latin a portion of preservation of health poem "Vina Probantur Odore Sapor Nitore Colore" at base of lid and inscribed "Solo Die Gloria in Vino Veritas Pax Voriscum" at top of lid. On verso of lid dated 1649 in oval circle. Hallmarked on base and on footed lion CDM - CD M W and cartouche on both - Maker's mark V cartouche, two marks worn illegible from age. It is large at approx 16.5" H and heavy at approx 2.85-2.9 KG.
