Description
Attributed to the Santa Clara Pueblo of New Mexico (possibly of Teresita Naranjo).
The bottom underside of the pottery is seen, the signature of the artist is not completely legible. Santa Clara Pueblo is visible. There are chips and flaking paint on the rim of the bottom underside. The shape of the pottery is ovoid and tapers down to an indented bottom. The center tapers up and slightly indents; the opening is wide and rimless. The color of the pottery is a rust/orange and there are deep cut designs on the pottery. The pottery is clay/terra cotta. The interior of the pottery has been glazed a rust/orange color. The pottery is of the Santa Clare Pueblo and is burnished red ware pottery and the design on the pottery is a water serpent.
The signature on the bottom underside of the pottery does not indicate Marie Navarro. Extensive research has not revealed any potter from Santa Clara Pueblo with the name of Marie Navarro. There are many Marie Navarro websites, but none are potters from Santa Clara Pueblo. The pottery is most possibly that of Teresita Naranjo (1919 - 1999).
Santa Clara pottery was originally made for home use - storage, water vessels, cooking - with the potters producing the wares for tourists beginning in the 1880's. Santa Clara is known for its distinctive glossy black or red finishes. Santa Clara redware pottery is made with the same clay as the black ware, but fired in a hotter, highly oxygenated fire to produce the different color finish. Santa Clara Pueblo has an over 300 year tradition of pottery making. The water serpent on the pottery is referred to as the Avanyu design (water serpent in the Tewa language) - the language spoken by the Santa Clara Native Americans.
Provenance- collection of Mrs D. Duffy, Santa Barbara, CA.
