Description
August, 1865. Manuscript letter from C. L. Woodworth to his children providing a detailed account of the condition of free slaves in the Carolinas. "Although many an[sic] one confessed that he went hungry often and had hardly rags to cover his nakedness, yet not one of them would admit that he was ready to go back to the work and state of a slave." 8vo, 8 pp., ink on wove. Woodworth served as a chaplain in the Union during the Civil War.
Condition
Final page with soiling along folds, ink a bit faded, else Very Good.
