Description
An eyewitness account of the Battle of Plattsburg – a key American victory during the War of 1812. Contains details that we've been unable to find in other printed sources. It is probably a draft as it has considerable corrections and is obviously being prepared as a report. Not complete, with only 3 of the 6 original folio leaves; still, the document is rich in unique eyewitness material. Clearly written from the American side, as it tells us that Sir George Prevost (the British Commander) "left in our hands upwards of 200 prisoners including three officers, and between four and five hundred deserters." Interestingly, the document estimates enemy losses at over 1500, though official records put the number of killed or missing closer to 900. High resolution renderings of the photos accompanying this lot are available upon request.
